Are you a frequent flyer?

Now that winter is slowly coming to a halt, spring break and vacations are just around the corner! Flying in an airplane causes the skin to become extremely dehydrated due to airplane cabins having such low humidity. When flying, dry skin becomes drier and, oily skin gets even oilier. When skin lacks water, it over compensates and actually produces more oil, the last thing oily skin needs! Dry skin with little to no oil glands will also deplete any moisture. So airplanes pretty much rob moisture directly from our skin, wreaking havoc! Here are some useful tips on how to care for your skin on an airplane.

FLIGHT-READY…or are you?

Use a serum under your sunscreen.
Load your skin up with as much hydration and protection as possible. Apply a serum under your SPF to help deliver moisture deep into the skin. Look for something with hyaluronic acid.  Try SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel.

Sunscreen Sunscreen Sunscreen!
When we fly in an airplane, we are closer to the sun which lands us closer to those damaging UV rays. The windows on the airplane don’t filter out all of the damaging UV rays, so even though you are not in direct sunlight, you’re still exposed to some of the harmful rays. Wear a Broad Spectrum SPF on the entire face and neck (Don’t forget about the ears). And ladies, foundations with SPF are not enough coverage. Try using Skin Ceuticals Physical Fusion 50. We love this because it has translucent color spheres that adapt to every skin tone!

READY FOR TAKE OFF!

Choose the window seat, But not for the view!
Incidental exposure causes 78% off premature aging. Incidental exposure is when you’re not intentionally trying to get sun exposure. UVA rays are responsible for the damage to the DNA cells and lead to premature wrinkles, age or brown spots, and visible signs of aging. When in an airplane you are 30,000 feet closer to the sun and its damaging rays. Choose a window seat so you can close the shade and protect your skin!

POST-CARE

Exfoliate.
Have you ever felt icky and dehydratied after getting off an airplane? When you land at your destination, whether it be home or a hotel, you will want to cleanse and exfoliate the skin to remove surface dryness. Avoid scrubs that contain natural grains such as apricot kernels and almonds. The sharp edges can scratch and irritate the skin. Use gentle micro-beads with refreshing citrus, like Skin Ceuticals Micro-Exfoliating Scrub.

Treat yourself, don’t cheat yourself.
After cleansing and exfoliating the skin, you’ll want to replenish the skin. It’s important to add back in hydration to brighten the skin from post-flight dullness. I like Skin Ceuticals Hydrating B5 masque because it re-establishes water balance and has a high concentration of Vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid, leaving the skin supple and smooth. My favorite trick is to hang my head off the bed for a few minutes while I have my mask applied. The skin can look sluggish, so bringing some fresh blood to the face will help tired skin look radiant in just 2 easy minutes.
